In 1972, Lambda Chi Alpha abolished the pledge program and instituted the Associate Member in its place. New members in the Lambda Chi Alpha are immediately welcomed as potential brothers in the bond through the Fraternity’s exoteric Associate Member Ceremony. Over the course of eight to ten weeks, they learn about Lambda Chi Alpha, its history, how we are organized, how we function as a group, how we govern ourselves, how we develop leaders for our chapter, our campus, our country, and, most importantly, how we develop Brotherhood. New members are provided with a foundation of conceptual understandings and practical skills facilitating developmental growth as men and contributing Brothers of Lambda Chi Alpha. The Fraternity offers knowledge, skills, support, and opportunities in a structured, brotherly environment, yet the opportunity to move forward is still inherently placed upon the individual to make what they will of the experience.
At that time an Associate member is invested with all the rights and protections of an Initiated member with 3 exceptions. Those 3 exceptions are they can't vote on disciplinary action, can't vote on initiation, and finally they can't vote on the disassociation of other associate members. Beyond those three things, Associate members will be everything that is expect of initiated members and will be assigned a Big Brother to guide them.
Lambda Chi Alpha's Zero Hazing Policy
Lambda Chi Alpha's first stance against hazing was in 1928 at a North-American Inter-Fraternity Conference meeting when the fraternity condemned the practice. Today Lambda Chi Alpha prohibits hazing of any form, on or off campus, by any of its members.
